Apps voor Nederland (Apps for The Netherlands) was the first national contest that was aimed at creating new applications with the available open data of the Dutch government. Developers could use the newly opened national data portal for this purpose. New data became available to developers in the four months that the contest was running.

The contest started during PICNIC 2011, at which moment the data portal was official opened. The contest was modelled after the the successful contest 'Apps for Democracy' in the United States and our own first local app competition called 'Apps for Amsterdam'.

The contest was commissioned by the Dutch ministries of Economic Affairs, Agriculture & Innovation, the Interior and Kingdom relations and Education and organized by Waag. The contest was continued under the title 'National App Contest' by the Platform Open Data, ECP and the Ministry.
